Recap: LACC vs Mission College

LA City 1, Mission College 2

Cubs baseball is back with a new team, a new head coach in Selwyn Young, and a season ripe in optimism. More details are forthcoming in future news stories including a finalized schedule.

The Cubs opened their season at Mission College. Mistakes decide close baseball games and mistakes were fewer for Mission. LA City had one error that led to a run being scored in the first inning. However, that error hurt the most as the Mission Eagles recorded no errors for the game.

Although the Cubs were down early, they played hard, smart, and fielded well. Freshman utility fielder Wesley Leary led off the third inning with a single up the middle. Then, freshman infielder Milton Jefferson (Dorsey HS) delivered a clutch two-out double with two-outs that scored Leary and tied the game.

Mission answered back in the fifth inning with a two-out hit that scored the winning run.

The top-of-the-ninth nearly witnessed a Cub comeback. With two outs, sophomore outfielder Ryan Davis stretched the count to 3-2 and then answered with a line drive up the middle. Unfortunately, the Cubs left two on base. The game decider came at home plate where the Cubs had the tying run thrown out.
