LA
City 61, Compton College 57 (OT)
Fri. Feb. 2
It was a game the Lady Cubs believed they could win but it would
far from easy. They were correct in both thoughts - they won and
it wasn't easy.
Compton
led 29-25 at half time, and built a second half lead to 36-29
with 16:15 remaining in regulation play. Compton still led at
the 11:20 mark, 44-41.
However,
the last part of the second half favored LA City. A driving lay-up
from freshman guard Jackie Flamenco (Hollywood HS / Los Angeles)
off a pass from point guard Diana Hernandez (Dorsey HS / Los Angeles)
tied the score 44-44 with 9:35 remaining. "City" led
51-48 with four minutes left in regulation, but Compton rallied
in the final minute to tie the score at 54-54 and take the game
into overtime.
Overtime
proved challenging for both squads as neither budged on defense.
The Lady Cubs led 56-55 two minutes into the five minute overtime.
A free throw from freshman center Carmen De La Cruz (Bell HS /
Bell) with two minutes remaining kept LA City in the lead, 58-57.
With 57 seconds on the clock, LACC led 59-57.
Compton
fouled De La Cruz who went to the free throw line for two attempts.
She missed the first but made the second free throw to push the
Lady Cubs lead to 60-57.
With
21 seconds remaining, Compton lost the ball out of bounds on a
bad pass. The Lady Tartars then fouled freshman guard Lynea Williams
(Crenshaw HS / Los Angeles) who scored one of two free throws
to put LACC ahead 61-57 with 18 seconds remaining. A last second
shot by Compton fell short and the Lady Cubs nabbed their second
South Coast Conference victory of the year.
Williams
and De La Cruz each scored 16 points for the Lady Cubs. Hernandez
added nine points.
