(Aug.
30, 2005) - - Bruno Sandoval has accepted the position of head
women's basketball coach at Los Angeles City College. Sandoval
most recently served as head coach of the Boyle Heights-based
AAU LA Hot Shots.
"I'm
excited with the opportunity Los Angeles City College has presented
me and I look forward to building the program," said Sandoval.
"One of the things I think I bring to the job is a passion
for basketball and teaching the game. I see the passion that Coach
Miller brings to his coaching but he also has a burning passion
for all the teams at LA City as Athletic Director. It is our goal
to elevate the Lady Cubs to a respected and competitive level
in the South Coast Conference."
Sandoval graduated from Pioneer High School, in Whittier, Calif.,
where he was a three-year varsity starter at forward. He was named
All-Conference in the Del Rio League his junior and senior seasons.
He began his collegiate career at Cerritos College where he was
a two-year starting forward, and averaged 9 points and 7 rebounds
per game. He then transferred to San Francisco State University
where he played for former coach and Virginia Tech alum Charlie
Thomas. Sandoval started as a junior at S.F. State and helped
guide the "Gators" to their first ever winning season
in the powerful California Collegiate Athletic Association. His
senior season was cut short due to injuries.
"Bruno
Sandoval is a student of the game and has a tremendous commitment
for the game of basketball and for success," said LACC Athletic
Director Mike Miller. "He is totally committed to the student-athlete.
We look forward to him building a winning tradition for the Lady
Cubs."
Sandoval holds an Associate of Arts degree from Cerritos in General
Studies. He graduated from San Francisco State in 2003 with a
B.A. in English while also earning recognition on the Athletic
Honor Roll and Dean's List. Sandoval is currently completing his
Master's degree in TV & Film with an emphasis in screenwriting
at Cal State-Los Angeles.
Sandoval, who replaced former coach Desiree McNeal, aims to improve
upon the Lady Cubs' 10-16 in 2004-05, including a fifth place
finish in the South Coast Conference.
