(Sept. 16, 2005) - -The Lady Cubs cross country team put together an inspiring, team-oriented effort in the Palomar College Invitational, Friday, Sept. 16, that resulted in a third place finish. The 5K meet was held on the hilly trails of Guajome Regional Park in Vista, Calif., under sunny skies and temperatures that hovered near 80 degrees.

LACC freshman Rossy Ramirez parlayed with the front-runners throughout the race enroute to a highly regarded 8th place finish at 23:10.50. Freshman Mayra Lopez scored a season-best 14th place at 23:44.25. Freshman Violettea Vlasova was close behind at 19th at 24:14.40.

Cuyamaca College, of El Cajon, captured the team title while individual medalist honors went to Cuyamaca sophomore Nicole Wicastro with a time of 20:57.95.

"This was a great overall performance. It showed our balance as a team," said LACC coach Tyrus DeMinter. "Our third and fourth place finishers at UC San Diego (Sept.9) stepped it up and finished as our two best runners today. Our sixth and seventh placer runners last week moved up to fourth and fifth on the team. It was good for the ladies to see that we can compete well even if one of us isn't having as good a day. It was a challenging course so I was pleased to see the team respond the way it did.

"We're looking forward to our meet next Saturday at Central Park in Huntington Beach. We'll be closer to home so friends and family should be able to attend and show their support. The best part of finishing third in our second meet of the year is I know we can and will do better as the season progresses. We're not showing all of our cards yet."

Freshman Isela Soto had a solid run of 24:46.10 for a 25th place. Freshman Blanca Flores was in the mix at 25:11.21 for 29th place. Other top-50 finishing Lady Cubs from the more than 80 entrants included sophomore Veronica Balduhayeva (36th) and freshman Carmen Velasquez (45th).

LACC now turns its attention to the Golden West Invitational this Saturday, Sept. 24, at Central Park in Huntington Beach.
