(Sept.
9, 2005) - - The Lady Cubs cross country team opened their season
last Friday, Sept. 9, at the So Cal Community College Preview
with enthusiasm and optimism enroute to a 15th place team finish.
The meet was held on the lush campus of the University of California
at San Diego under near perfect weather for the 18 teams and over
180 participating athletes.
Orange
Coast College won the overall 5K event with a total team time
of 1:43.10.20. LACC recorded a team time of 2:04.33.70. LACC sophomore
Violeta Vlasova was the highest finishing Lady Cub at 73rd and
a time of 23:27.70. Orange Coast sophomore Gabriela Santana dominated
the field with a winning time of 19:30.10. Her closest challenger
was nearly 23-seconds behind.
"I
feel good about our overall performance at this meet because many
of girls came from programs where they weren't among the top two
or three on their high school teams," said LACC coach Tyrus
DeMinter. "They were the proverbial athletes that were left
behind. They came to LA City because I have a reputation of developing
athletes that didn't get to shine in high school. We're young
and inexperienced compared to some of the state powers we ran
against. However, I believe that as the season progresses we'll
dramatically improve in all areas. It helped that we arrived in
San Diego one day early so the team could become familiar with
the course. They learned when to make a move and they definitely
competed hard. I'm happy with their performance. I want to do
better but so does the team. We have a lot of work ahead but that's
expected."
Freshman
Rossy Ramirez was next fastest for LACC at 98th (24.27.6) followed
by freshman teammates Mayra Lopez and Isela Soto, who finished
109th and 110th, respectively. Other LACC runners who finished
the course include Blanca Flores, Maelecia Fulwood, Waquihsi Martin,
and Veronica Balduhayeva.
LACC
returns to action this Friday, Sept. 17, at the Palomar College
Invitational.
