(Oct.
8, 2005) - - Post-season possibilities for the Lady Cubs cross
country team remain prime if last weekend's (Oct. 8) Irvine Invitational
at Irvine Regional Park is any indicator. Meanwhile, freshman
Rossy Ramirez continued as the Lady Cubs' front-runner for a fifth
consecutive meet.
Ramirez
was strong throughout the 5K race before being the first Lady
Cub to cross the finish line in 37th place with a time of 22:47
minutes. Freshman Violetta Vlasova was only six second behind
at 22:53 and 39th place.
Over
100 runners from 14 southern California community colleges competed
against LA City with LACC scoring a 7th place overall finish at
1:57.13. Riverside Community College won the team competition
with a time of 1:43.32.8. Meryl Follosco, of Cerritos College,
captured individual honors at 19:53 minutes over a course that
had few hills but greeted runners with warm temperatures.
"We
were ninth at Irvine last year so I think this year's meet shows
we're improving as a team and program," said LACC cross country
coach Tyrus DeMinter. "We are maturing as a team and now
our runners are closing their respective times to each other.
Earlier this season, we were spread apart by as many as three
minutes. Now our top five runners are within one minute of each
other's times. We've beaten three of our conference opponents
in various meets this year and we are looking to add El Camino
to that list after our meet this weekend."
Freshman
Isela Soto turned another strong performance at 23:39 minutes
for 51st place. Fellow frosh Blanca Flores finished 53rd but only
four-seconds behind at 23:43. Mayra Lopez ran another steady pace
at 24:11 and 76th place.
Sophomore
Veronica Balduhayeva and freshman Shanika Linear scored points
to round out the seven-member contingent for the Lady Cubs.
"Blanca
continues to improve each week," said DeMinter. "I don't
know what to expect from week to week with her but I know it is
going to be better than her previous meet. The team's grouping
was the best of the season. We had one of our best race starts
so I'm very proud of all the ladies. We're definitely headed in
the right direction for a top-four spot in our conference meet
and an invitation to the cross country meet."
