(Oct.
14, 2005) - - The Lady Cubs cross country team will spend the
next two weeks preparing for the South Coast Conference Championship
following an upbeat season finale at the Santa Barbara City College
Invitational on Fri., Oct. 14.
LA
City's top runner was sophomore Violetta Vlasova who finished
26th around the 5K circuit with a time of 21.35.76. It was the
second occasion that Vlasova has led LACC. She also topped the
Lady Cubs chart in the season opener at U.C. San Diego on Sept.
9.
Freshman Blanca Flores had one of her best meets of 2005 as LACC's
second quickest at 22:.23.26 and 42nd overall. Rossy Ramirez was
close behind in 50th place with a time of 22:43.32.
One hundred runners from 12 southern and high desert California
community colleges competed. LA City finished in 8th place with
a total time of 1:53.11.86. Glendale College captured team honors
at 1:42.12.53. Brittany Grimes, of Bakersfield College, was the
meet's medalist at 18:27.98.
"We
were able to change our schedule at the last moment so we could
run at Santa Barbara," said LACC cross country coach Tyrus
DeMinter. "We were originally scheduled elsewhere but Santa
Barbara made more sense. It offered a course lay-out that was
more compatible to Griffith Park which is where the Conference
Championship will be held. Regardless, I'm pleased with the results
because I see continued improvement with all our runners. My opinion
remains unchanged in that we have four or five who on any given
day can lead the team while the others are close in the pack.
This bodes well as we look for a top-four finish in the SCC Championship
and hopefully an eventual invitation to the State Championships
in Fresno."
Isela
Soto showed her consistency in turning another competitive time.
She was less than 13 seconds behind Ramirez in 54th place at 22:56.09.
Mayra Lopez ran another steady race for 58th place at 23:33.44.
Sophomore Veronica Balduhayeva scored one of her best times of
the season at 23:59.88 and 62nd place.
The
2005 South Coast Conference Cross Country Championships will be
hosted by LA City at Griffith Park on Fri., Oct. 28.
