Cross Country Completes Regular Season At Santa Barbara

(Oct. 14, 2006) - - The Lady Cubs cross country team will spend the next two weeks preparing for the South Coast Conference Championship following an upbeat season finale at the Santa Barbara City College Invitational on Sat., Oct. 14.

One hundred twenty nine runners and 16 teams were entered. LA City finished in 9th place with a total time of 1:49.57. Glendale College captured team honors at 136.19. Tove Berg, of Glendale College, was the meet’s medalist at 18:13.98.

LA City’s top runner was freshman Melissa Paralta who finished 18th around the 5K circuit with a time of 20:05 minutes.

Mayra Ivonne Lopez (Hollywood HS) finished 43rd at 21:03. Fellow frosh Teyana Vizcarra was close behind in 45th place at 21:06.

City sophomore Veronika Baldukhayeva (Ulan-Ude HS, Russia) was 78th at 22:58. Freshman Maritzela Baraket was 100th with a time of 24:43. Freshman Diana Anzora finished 126th.

It was a very positive meet for lady Cubs,” said coach Tyrus DeMinter. “We placed 9th out of 16 teams and had some very good performances from all the ladies especially our latest addition to the team, Maritzela Barakat, who was our fifth lady but also the very key to our score. She continues to improve week by week. This team has the potential to advance to the state championship and be among the top teams in the state.”

The 2006 South Coast Conference Cross Country Championships will be hosted by Pasadena CC at Brookside Park in Pasadena on Fri., Oct. 27.
