Mosqueda Named Lady Cubs Head Cross Country And Track & Field
Coach
LOS
ANGELES (Aug. 14, 2007) - - Veteran coach, professional distance
runner, and track & field competitor Sylvia Mosqueda, of Los
Angeles, has been named head coach for the Los Angeles City College
women's Cross Country and Track & Field teams. Mosqueda most
recently was competing in professional competitions. The 2007
cross country and 2008 track & field seasons will be Mosqueda's
third overall year as a collegiate coach. This includes coaching
cross country and track & field at East Los Angeles College
in 1995 and the Lady Cubs cross country team in 1996.
Mosqueda's
extensive achievements began at San Gabriel High School where
she was a two-time League Champion (1983-84) in the Mile and Two-Mile.
Her 5th place finish in the 1983 State Championships in the Two
Mile was followed by winning the 1983 CIF Cross Country Championship
and being named a Kenney National Finalist.
She continued her career at East Los Angeles College where she
captured the 1986 Conference cross country individual championship
before seizing the 1986 State Cross Country title. In fact, Mosqueda
was a "triple event" California state track champion
in winning the 800 meter, 1500 meter, and 5000 meter events. Her
junior college records in the 800, 1500, 3000, and 5000 meter
competitions still stand today.
Mosqueda earned a combined academic and athletic scholarship to
Cal State-Los Angeles where she competed in cross country and
track & field at Cal State-Los Angeles in 1987-88. One of
her defining honors at CSULA was being recognized as one of the
most versatile runners of her generation. Besides five school
records at Cal State-LA, she also collected two individual NCAA
titles - one in cross country and one in track & field - and
seven combined NCAA titles. She also finished 2nd place in the
1987 Los Angeles Marathon before her season encore of being named
the Billy Jean King Woman of the Year in 1987.
Her
1988 season was highlighted by capturing the NCAA Division I 10,000
Meter championship with an NCAA all-time record time.
Mosqueda
continued her running career long after she graduated from CSULA
with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education. Her accumulated
record setting finishes propelled her to the No. 1 ranking among
all U.S. women competing in the 10,000 meters in 1995.
Between
1989 and 2007, Mosqueda qualified for many of the highest regarded
National meets ranging from the 800 meters through the Marathon.
She also accepted invitations to compete in all five U.S. Olympic
Trials between 1988 and 2004 in the 5000 meters, 10,000 meters,
and the Marathon.
Her
international experience includes the 1989 Pan-Am games, 1991
Good Will Games, scoring the fastest American time in the 2001-02
Half Marathon World Championships, and the 2003 World Championships
Marathon in Paris, France.
Cal State University at Los Angeles honored Mosqueda in 2007 when
she was inducted into the CSULA Athletic Hall of Fame. She is
currently ranked No. 1 nationally in the Masters division for
Women.
"There
is no doubt that Sylvia brings LA City a wealth of experience
and competence that few other coaches in cross country and/or
track & field on any level can boast," said LA City Director
of Athletics Mike Miller. "It's truly amazing and an opportunity
of a lifetime for our Lady Cubs to be under the guidance of an
honest-to-goodness, world class star in the worlds of cross country
and track & field. It will be exciting to see just how high
Sylvia will lead our respective programs."
