Lynea
Williams Signs with Long Beach State University
LOS
ANGELES (April 26, 2007) - - Los Angeles City College guard Lynea
Williams has signed a national letter-of-intent and accepted a
scholarship offer to attend and play basketball at Long Beach
State University next year. She is the second Lady Cub in LA City
women's basketball history to earn an NCAA Division I basketball
scholarship and the first for Lady Cub head coach Bruno Sandoval.
Desiree Johnson was the first Lady Cub when she signed with San
Diego State in 2005.
"I
thought it was important to add some experience to our youthful
roster," said Long Beach State head coach Mary Hegarty, who
enters her fifth season in 2007-08. "Lynea brings skill,
athleticism, and maturity to our program. She has the character
and work ethic I value and she is also representative of the emphasis
I place on recruiting locally. Lynea is an accomplished community
college student-athlete who will blend nicely with our returners,
another junior college transfer in Ana Fakatou (Cypress JC), and
the three student-athletes we signed early."
Williams, a 5-9 multi-purpose guard, was named South Coast Conference
Co-Most Valuable Player-of-the-Year this past season. She was
the Conference's second leading scorer at 17.7 points per game
while also grabbing 5.9 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. Williams
was honored as Regional Player-of-the-Year by the LA Times following
her senior season at Crenshaw High School where she averaged 16.6
points and 10.1 rebounds per game. She originally signed with
NCAA Division I University of Vermont out of Crenshaw, but was
forced to red-shirt her freshman year after injuring her shoulder
in the preseason. She attended Weatherford Junior College in Texas
during the 2006 Spring Semester.
"I'm
excited for what next season will bring," said Williams.
"It will be a new start for me and that means I'll have to
prove myself again. I know that's part of moving forward. I want
to thank the great people of Los Angeles City College and Coach
Sandoval. I may not have had the opportunity for a scholarship
without all that were involved."
